Salone Satellite

The Salone Satellite was created in 1998 to bringing together and showcase the most promising young designers from all over the world at the Salone del Mobile. Many of the pieces are presented as prototypes and in the fourteen previous editions many of the designs showcased have gone into production, and many of the participating designers have become important figures in the world of design since.
Each year 700 young designers and students of the most prestigious design schools and universities exhibit and exchange ideas at this unique showcase. The proposed designs are examined and evaluated by a prestigious Committee consisting of top professionals from the world of design, architecture and media including designer James Irvine and design critic Beppe Finessi. This year at Salone Satellite up and coming young designers who will be showcasing their work include Azumi, Big Game, Staffan Holm, Satyendra Pakhale, Donata Paruccini, Studio Juju and Sebastian Wrong.

"Faceture" by Phil Cuttace

New Zealand based designer Phil Cuttance faceted creations are fun and captivating but having the opportunity to see exactly how they are made, watching the incredible video that accompanies them adds to their creation and innovation. The Facture series consists of handmade faceted vases, lamp shades and tables. The idea behind them is simple but effective. Each object is produced individually by casting a water-based resin into a simple handmade mould. The mould is then manually manipulated to create the object's form before each casting, making every piece utterly unique. Not only has Phil designed and created the finished products but he also designed and created the machine in which he uses to mould each individual piece.

The year of the Titanic

In April 1912 the Titanic made its maiden voyage and 100 years later, the Titanic Belfast museum opens in celebration of her construction. The White Star Line ocean liner was originally constructed in the Belfast shipyard and the museum celebrates her craftsmanship and the people who built her. The museun whose exterior resembles that of an iceberg was designed by the Irish architectural firm TODD. The building itself is clad in 3,000 individual silver anodized aluminum shards that required 3D modeling to complete. Although the exterior resembles that of an iceberg its inspiration was based on four 90ft hulls.
Inside, the museum features 9 interactive galleries that explore the sights, sounds, smells and stories of the Titanic, as well as the city and people which made her. Visitors can explore how the ship was constructed and how it looked and felt to be inside it with the replica interiors from the main stairway to the lavish rooms of the wealthy and the rooms of third class steerage.
TODD Architects employed 3D modeling and Building Information Modeling in order to design the highly efficient building. They are currently seeking BREEAM Excellent status after the museum officially opened on March 31, 2012

Easter Inpsiration

With easter only days away its time to start thinking about decorating the easter table, wether its an easter lunch or a big family get together a few simple touches make all the diffrence. A fresh, organic and natural approach using nature as your inspiration for materials is the idea. Create this by using lots of white and pastel shades of blues, greens, yellows and pinks. Flowers such as daffodils, tulips, snow drops and lavender with willow braches and small twigs add that touch of elegance with an organic twist. Adding decorative egg shells, butterflies or birds create a dramatic but simple centre-piece for your Easter table. Below are a few of my favourite Easter inspired table settings. It's time to get creative.

Karim Rashid for Aran Cucine

Karim Rashid, one of the most famous contemporary designers of our era will showcase his new kitchen model created and designed for Italian manufacturer Aran Cucine at a presentation taking place on the 17th of April at the Milan Furniture Fair. Aran Cucine are one of the top kitchen manufacturers in the production of modern and classic Italian kitchens. The new model is has a rounded facaded form, which undoubtedly will appeal to the International buyers with the upper and lower base being one single entity. The New kitchen model will be available to to order from Aran Cucine from that date onwards. Really looking forward to seeing this creation.

20 Chairs / 20 Architects

The 20 Chairs / 20 Architects Exhibtion will be running in Dublin from the 19th of April till the middle of May at the O'Driscoll Furniture showroom on Lombards Street, Dublin 2. Run by the furniture designers Simon andTadgh O’Driscoll, the exhibition will showcase 20 chairs choosen by 20 architects as their favourite pieces. Some architects have chosen designs of their own or chairs that have featured in designs that they have worked on,others,have choosen more iconic pieces like the Egg Chair designed by Arne Jacobsen. For all furniture designers and furniture lovers, this is one exhibtion that should be seen.

Kirath Ghudoo Wallpaper Collection 2012

Having been short listed in the final three of the Homes & Gardens magazine Young Designer Award 2012, Kirath Ghudoo has launched her new collection of trademark wallpapers "Mis Match". Kirath creates designs that can be mixed and matched, making the whole process more sustainable,saving on waste and cheaper as you are left with no cutoff's. The designs can be cut in a variety of different ways to create new patterns and can be hung portrait or landscape. Additionally, Kirath has launched a Bespoke service to design one off wallpapers to suit your interior. The Mis Match Collection will be shown this year at the 100% Design show in London.
